One of the first things I noticed driving an older Kenworth during harvest was that the air conditioner was actually cold.

Really cold.

The problem wasn’t the temperature.

The problem was the airflow.

Even with the fan turned all the way up and the A/C on its coldest setting, it barely pushed enough air through the vents to cool the cab on a hot afternoon.

When an A/C system blows cold air but the airflow is weak, the problem is usually somewhere in the air delivery system rather than the refrigeration system itself.

Start With the Cabin Air Filter

If your truck has a cabin air filter, this should be the very first thing you inspect.

A filter packed with dust, dirt, leaves, and debris can dramatically reduce airflow even though the air coming through is still ice cold.

Think of it like trying to breathe through a dirty shop rag.

The air conditioner is still making cold air.

It just can’t move very much of it through the clogged filter.

Many Kenworth owner manuals recommend inspecting and replacing the cab air filter whenever airflow begins to decrease, and especially in dusty environments like harvest. 

Harvest Dust Can Plug Things Up Quickly

Driving during harvest creates conditions most highway trucks rarely experience.

Every day you’re surrounded by:

  • Dust.
  • Chaff.
  • Corn leaves.
  • Dirt.
  • Pollen.

All of that eventually finds its way into the HVAC system.

Even if your truck isn’t due for a filter replacement yet, harvest can clog one surprisingly fast.

If you spend every day around combines, grain bins, and gravel roads, it’s worth checking the filter much sooner than normal.

Check the Blower Motor

If the filter looks clean but the fan still seems weak on every speed, the blower motor itself becomes a likely suspect.

As blower motors wear out, they often continue spinning, but they don’t move nearly as much air as they did when they were new.

Many drivers immediately assume the blower motor resistor is bad.

Sometimes it is.

But if your fan still works on every speed, including high, the resistor usually isn’t the problem.

A bad blower resistor more commonly causes one or more fan speeds to stop working completely.

For example:

  • Speed 1 doesn’t work.
  • Speed 2 doesn’t work.
  • Only high works.

If every speed still functions but the airflow is weak across all of them, I’d start looking elsewhere before replacing the resistor.

Make Sure the Blend Door Is Working Correctly

Inside the HVAC box are small doors that direct air where it’s supposed to go.

These are commonly called blend doors or mode doors.

If one sticks or the actuator fails, airflow may not reach the vents correctly.

You might notice things like:

  • Air coming from the floor when set to dash vents.
  • Air coming from the defroster when it shouldn’t.
  • Airflow changing on its own.

If the air doesn’t seem to be coming out of the correct vents, this is definitely worth checking.

Check the Evaporator for Dust and Debris

This is one problem that’s especially common on trucks working in dusty environments.

The evaporator sits inside the HVAC box.

As air passes across it, dust, pollen, and chaff can slowly collect on the fins.

Eventually the evaporator almost acts like another air filter.

The A/C is still producing cold air…

But very little of it can get through.

Harvest season is especially hard on evaporators because trucks spend hours around combines, grain bins, gravel roads, and unloading operations.

If everything else checks out, a dirty evaporator could easily be the reason airflow keeps getting weaker.

Don’t Forget the Fresh Air Intake

Another area that gets overlooked is the fresh air intake near the cowl.

Leaves.

Dust.

Corn leaves.

Small sticks.

Harvest debris.

Anything that blocks this area can reduce the amount of air entering the HVAC system.

It’s one of the easiest things to inspect, and it costs nothing to clean.

A Weak Fan Isn’t Always an Air Conditioning Problem

This is probably the biggest takeaway.

If your Kenworth is blowing cold air…

Your A/C refrigerant system may actually be working perfectly.

The issue may simply be getting enough air into the cab.

That’s why I always separate the problem into two questions.

Is the air cold?

If yes…

Then ask:

Is enough air actually coming out of the vents?

Those are two completely different problems with completely different solutions.

My First Suspects

If I climbed into a Kenworth tomorrow that had ice-cold A/C but barely any airflow, this is the order I’d check things.

  1. Cabin air filter.
  2. Fresh air intake.
  3. Debris around the blower fan.
  4. Dirty evaporator.
  5. Weak blower motor.
  6. Blend door or mode door problem.
  7. Electrical issue affecting blower motor speed.

Starting with the simple things can save a lot of time and money.

If those look good, then move on to the blower motor, evaporator, and HVAC doors.

In many cases, weak airflow has nothing to do with the A/C system making cold air.

It’s simply a matter of getting that cold air into the cab where you can actually enjoy it.
